Adrian was completely surprised and incredibly pleased to win the British Science Fiction Award for Best Novel on Saturday 8 April at EasterCon (Conversation) 2023 held at the Hilton Hotel at the NEC in Birmingham, UK.

The winning book, City of Last Chances, is published by Head of Zeus.

A second book in the same series was also announced at the literary convention.

Caroline Mullen (chair) introduces the guests of honour at the Opening Ceremony: Zen Cho, Niall Harrison, Kari Sperring, Adrian Tchaikovsky, Jennell Jaquays (virtual) and Ursula Vernon (T. Kingfisher) (virtual)

Adrian, as a Guest of Honour at the convention,  engaged in an exclusive interview with John Coxon, the co-host and creater of the Octothorpe podcast.

Adrian has been published now for 15 years and so Tor/PanMacmillan threw him a party at the convention with lovely cupcakes decorated with Lords of Uncreation cover art and wine.

Bella Pagan, Publisher at Tor, also gave a speech.

Video Text: Pan Macmillan first published Adrian in 2008 with Empire in Black and Gold and that was 15 years ago! Since that time Adrian has published 21 books, and that’s just with Tor, that’s only with Tor and he’s actually published at least 7 novels by others

and countless collections. I did try to count them but I ran out of fingers, and time, and brain cells because they were so clever and numerous so I wasn’t able to count all of them. I can only conclude that Adrian has outsourced some of his writing to spiders, but

Adrian and the spiders are doing a really amazing job – so here’s to them!

So, Children of Time won the Arthur C. Clarke Award, Tiger and the Wolf won the British Fantasy Society Award for Best Fantasy, Shards of Earth won the British Science Fiction Society Award for Best Novel and he’s just won again – AGAIN!

This man is a winner in a ladybird waistcoat. So, and all his stuff has been translated into billions of languages, probably some insect ones as well that we don’t even know about. Our rights department is really clever so I expect spiders are reading these words as we speak and thanking Adrian for the representation. So we win just by Adrian sharing his company with us tonight so I want you all to raise a glass and a massive toast to the winner that is in our presence.

Bella Pagan
